In the city of Bhopal, while shooting for a film, Vijay Kumar, a well-known actor played by Akshay Kumar, urgently needs a driver’s license to complete his shoot on time. However, a misunderstanding with the motor vehicle inspector, Om Prakash Agarwal played by Emraan Hashmi, leads to a conflict between the two. Despite being a fan of Vijay, Om insists that the actor should legally obtain his license, which could take up to a month. Unfortunately, Vijay needs to leave for the United States within a week. The question remains whether he will be able to get the license before leaving.
In the film Selfiee, directed by Raj Mehta, the premise may seem weak, but the performances and punchlines make up for it. Akshay’s stardom is celebrated with references to his numerous projects and his iconic smile. Emraan’s portrayal of a fan-turned-foe is also noteworthy, though his Bhopali accent could use some work.
The first half of the movie is entertaining and funny, with effortless delivery of one-liners by Akshay. However, the second half focuses on the face-off between the two protagonists and lacks humor. The parts that revolve around the license test are also a bit stretched. The movie also takes a dig at trial by media and the #BoycottBollywood movement, but the depiction of loud electronic media coverage is becoming repetitive in movies.
Abhimanyu Singh as Suraj and Meghna Malik as Kamla Tiwari give impressive performances. Abhimanyu’s portrayal of Vijay’s former roommate is hilarious but becomes forced after a while. Meghna’s comic timing with Akshay is impeccable, while Diana Penty’s role as Naina is limited but classy. Nushrratt Bharuccha’s portrayal of Minty, Om Prakash’s wife, is also well-done.
The music in the film, especially ‘Main Khiladi’ and the title track, is dance-worthy and pumped up.
Overall, Selfiee is an enjoyable watch with several laugh-out-loud moments and good performances. If you’re looking for a rib-tickling comedy, this movie could be a good pick for the weekend.
